11:36 AM. A few minutes ago we saw Martin Lel win the Ing New York City Marathon in 2:09, followed by more than 35,000 runners, including our beloved, admired and brave Joaquín Brenes. He clocked 52 minutes for the 10 Kms and for the half marathon he achieved an unofficial time of 1:53. If he can keep up the pace he is running at this very moment, he could break his personal record of 3:58.
The first year that Tribu ran a marathon, we did it in Chicago as a team of six: Mario Calvo, Giovanni, Sanchez, Marcela Trejos, Joaquin Brenes, Carlos Soto, Liz Head and myself. This happened three years ago and it was an experience that put Quincho in tennis and roads, discipline and emotion of a marathon, an event that is lived intensely outside and inside the competition. In fact, last year we ran Las Vegas and Quincho, Giovanni and I did it, a marathon that we enjoyed and finished in a legitimate runner’s high, as this picture shows.
However, in this year 2007 the only marathon runner is precisely our hero of today: Joaquín Brenes, below in the picture with red t-shirt.
Let’s go Quincho…!!!!, we are watching his results, accompanying him in spirit and with our heart in yours. Send us photos.
5:37 PM. We don’t know anything about Joaquín and his post-marathon, however, when we checked the ING NYC Marathon website, we found a great time of 4:05, which doesn’t beat his best time, but it’s still a great time.
