In Laura Chinchilla’s site, www.laurachinchilla.com, her movement lost the opportunity to make a good first impression on me, and with the discourse of unity that she proposes, I think that she lacks an effective theme in the message in the electoral contest that is just beginning in Liberación Nacional. If “LaUra unites us”, could it be that the main problem of Costa Ricans is disunity? Or in other words, “If LaUra unites us”, is the promise of unity instead of change, prosperity or security?
For the promise of unity or union, on which the movement is focused, I think the return is too long and the offer is not close to my concerns as a citizen. In its proposal, one must first understand its “gaps” to understand the solution in the unity it puts forward. That is, the promise of unity or union is in the fact that he promises to close those gaps, and therefore, either you understand the route of his approach, or you are left with the idea that LaUra will unite us all in a “model of coexistence based on dialogue, respect and solidarity”, and with that, we will be happy forever and ever.
The general approach, as is to be expected from a group of politicians such as those headed by Laura Chinchilla, is absolutely correct and accurate, as they point out the main points of their agenda in the social, security, environmental, economic development and governance gaps. Therefore, the proposal of “LaUra nos une”, is focused on its promise to close the gaps and unite the Costa Rican society, which in principle looks romantic, typical of a student government or simply far from my concrete problems of security, development, education and competitiveness, to name a few. To add to my uneasiness for so much political verbiage, the message insists that it will unite in one more gap: the one “that prevents us from talking and agreeing to work together.” And this phrase came to add even more to the made-up proposal, posed, not very credible and far removed from my urgencies or issues of greater importance.
Personally, it seems to me that Laura Chinchilla has enough conditions to win a presidency and be a great president, as well as to deliver an effective management, particularly to give continuity to a good work and an excellent team in the government, today led by a tired president Arias. Meanwhile, the other pre-candidates, to put it in a nutshell, have an even bigger challenge ahead of them, since their Internet sites do not reach more than putting numbers behind their names, and for this reason, Araya 2010-2014, Berrocal 2010 and Echeverría 2010, present data, information, promises and more than what we are used to receive from politicians.
In any case, it is a pity that in the first opportunity to make an extraordinary first impression, “LaUra nos une” became a common experience of the usual politicians. Nevertheless, at least the “LaUra nos une” site brings many of the technological “bells and whistles” of the moment, as it is complete, current and worthy of today’s participatory and interactive Internet 2.0. However, it fails to give me the option to send a message, does not give me space to share my opinion and tells me that they are only interested in my membership.
Before I leave these keys for now, I want to add an additional comment. Apart from the fact that Laura is a name little related to the ex-vice president, as she is widely known as Laura Chinchilla, and not Laura only, the graphic used to highlight the “u” in Laura’s name, and thus emphasize the promise of unity, is genuinely clumsy. Don’t they realize that it proposes to pronounce Laura with a howl on the “u”?
The road is just beginning, and for this, hopefully the best person, the most prepared and most equipped to lead the country out of its normal, average and small course, will win. However, if Laura Chinchilla is that person, her online proposal today falls short and is, in the best of all possible estimations, more of the same.
