At the Saatchi Saatchi New Directors Show at Cannes last year, this was one of the chosen few to present a commercial. And while the other shorts dealt with all kinds of subjects and drew on all kinds of resources, this one was applauded and celebrated by the entire audience.
It seemed to me a contradiction that the applauded piece was a commercial, when precisely the show focuses on showing new directors showing off techniques and resources outside the box, in the dimension of the unexpected and daring. At the same time, it reminded me of Payless and the campaigns we produced for years for this client that had so much difficulty moving from transactions to relationships, and from shoe buyers to passionate women.
