At the end of 4 years as president of the association, I leave satisfied, grateful and excited, because together with all the associates and especially with my colleagues on the Board of Directors, we reinvented Ascap.

Until very recently, the Costa Rican Association of Advertising Agencies was not open to other commercial communication companies, as it was restricted only to advertising companies. Today ASCAP is an open organization that includes interactive agencies, public relations agencies, promo or btl agencies, creative boutiques, media centers and any company focused on commercial communication.

Four years ago, ASCAP did not have the official representation of the Cannes Lions International Festival nor was it focused on promoting creativity as the essence of our activity. In these two periods we promoted trips to the most important festivals in the world and thus, we turned the association into the main engine of creativity in our country. On their own merits and thanks to their creative talent, Costa Rican agencies began to win awards in the most important festivals, including the first 7 lions in Cannes.

In this exciting process of transformation, ASCAP focused on stimulating the country’s creative talent in line with its commitment to creativity. The creative workshops as well as the participation in festivals were important contributions to the association’s permanent work program, although no initiative has excited me more than the organization of the first Young Lions, a nationwide competition among young people under 28 years of age, to choose the pairs that later compete in Cannes.

In these years we have also added the representation of the EFFIE Awards, which next October will have its first national edition, where we will also celebrate creativity and effectiveness. And of course, we have maintained our commitment to the VOLCAN, as the main axis of our creative focus in the country by making it grow and turn it into the great stage for competition and creative exposure. So among many other achievements, the transformation of the association has been complete, comprehensive and exciting, for the strength of ASCAP today is one that only good can anticipate.

As I leave the presidency of the association I am satisfied and very positive about the future of ASCAP, especially for its new president, Dirk Stammes, as well as for the other members of the new board: Alberto Quirós of Jotabeqú as Vice-president, Carlos Fonseca as Treasurer, Ramiro Casó as Secretary, Manolo Gavilán as Fiscal, and in the important memberships, Carmen Mayela Fallas of Corporate Communications, Diego García of Tribu DDB, Marion Bakit of Ideas, Daniel Gavilán of Arte y Lógica and Rolando Rodríguez of Camedia Central. And as a key piece of absolutely all this great collective effort, Lilliana González will continue in the executive management.

I can’t leave this morning’s typing without thanking Dirk Stammes and the new board of directors, for their commission to continue representing us at Cannes and to take on the Young Lions competition. My commitment to ASCAP and our great creative project to turn Costa Rica into a regional power is in soul, life and heart. I trust in this way to continue making my contribution.

I invite you to connect and make one of your favorites, the ASCAP web site, or what we have called, the virtual home of the association. It is at http:www.ascap.cr.
