Some time ago I applauded at the top of my lungs at the musical “In the Heights”, because I was thrilled to see that wonderful combination of flavors, smells and sounds masterfully blended on a Broadway stage. The music is sensational and because it feels like ours, the whole play becomes one’s own and is celebrated. The best song and the best message? Patience and faith.

The first time I saw a Broadway play must have been about 30 years ago. A while later in the evening my arms ached, not understanding at first that this was the way they felt because I had applauded so much. It had been the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes, it had been my first musical and the opening to everything I had ever been able to applaud.
A while ago I did it again for “In the Heights,” and especially because Patience and Faith has since been a self-advice and one I hand out whenever it seems appropriate. Patience and faith, that’s right, that the road is long and the problems are not few. Patience and faith, that the goal is the next summit, to then define the next one. Patience and faith. A lot of work, a lot of discipline, all the batteries in the world, joy, perseverance, destiny. Patience and faith.
