I discovered today that the phrase comes from Louis Brandeis, who summed it up as follows: “Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants”. It’s good! I understand he was referring to the contribution of transparency and accountability, as well as “the importance of making information available to the public.” Makes sense.
The first time I heard her famous phrase it led me to confirm commitments made for transparency and consistency. I believe his assertion is very true. The famous Jewish lawyer, elected to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1916, saw in the media “the most important guarantor of good government,” something I find very true and very debatable. At that time, when I first heard the disinfecting concept of light, it also led us to observe the difference between what lives in the light in contrast to all that exists in the dark.
The subject is a tricky one, for light coexists with shadows. In fact, if we look at it as day and night, they are even complementary as shown in this wonderful short film a few seconds past the 5 minute mark.
Back on the subject, of course I prefer light.
