More candidates than ideas. Today Costa Rica is the scene of a spectacular 3D caricature drawn by the politicians of the moment. Between handshakes and hugs, they join in alliances of all kinds and colors to achieve power, without prioritizing proposals or adding new ideas.
They all want the Presidency! while they do not add any energy that could make us think that they have a dream or even a nightmare. What a sad soap opera that politicians offer us, although I recognize that today’s episode with Otto Guevara and Rafael Angel Calderon has been a good accent of unexpected humor.
From the pre-candidatures in Liberación to the newest one in the opportunist alliances, none of the electoral movements put forward ideas that provoke at least a sigh. On the contrary, in cases such as that of my dear friend Don Fernando Berrocal, publicity becomes a spring of painful ridicule and “creative” offense. All this is like a kind of spell that starts in Zapote, where they live in a kind of fantasy, and reaches the last corner of the parties, without a serious plan or a different project coming out of any of them.
Because of all this situation that has been dragging on for years in collective anesthesia, when José María Figueres presented his idea of a country project, particularly in the meeting of businessmen in Tribu, it was easy and natural for me to join in collaborating. With the participation of many enthusiastic people, from all sectors and parties, we organized ourselves and created the Costa Rican Way, not as a political-electoral thing but as a participatory platform to redesign the country based on ideas and not on candidates. What a difference!
In the coming days we will make a first presentation of the progress achieved, which started with more than 500 ideas collected from all over Costa Rica through personal meetings and virtual meetings, including a Facebook community that already reaches almost 26,000 adherents. The road traveled is fresh, open and without alliances of any kind, to influence the course of things in our country, as already achieved with the issue of shark finning as well as with the proposal made for a referendum to recover governability.
Thus, I reiterate my criticism to politicians who only propose their name without adding an idea. Not as traditional columnists do, who only complain and lapidate, but with participation that seeks to make an effective contribution; because those who criticize and do not propose, are part of the problem. At the same time, I invite you to participate in the Costa Rican Way!
In the meantime, and as I always want to see the glass half full, I trust that the pre and candidates will migrate to the field of ideas. Which, in my opinion, should always come first.
