The importance of body language. A few days ago I received a message saying: “Hi Jorge, I came in to see your links. In “about me“, the picture you have according to the “body language” (see TED, Amy Cuddy’s talk) reflects a lack of confidence, something that my friend has in abundance. Anyway, I’ll leave you with the restlessness.”
Of course, as soon as I had some free time I went to see the talk referred to, which today I think we should all know. Do not miss it, it is really good.
In TED they add this excellent summary of the proposal: “Body language influences how others see us, but it can also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posturing” – showing an attitude of confidence, even while feeling insecure – can alter brain levels of testosterone and cortisol, and even improve our odds of success.”
That being the case, it was inevitable to return to the photograph my friend was referring to. Why do I like a portrait that reflects insecurity, doubt, and perhaps even weakness? Although I don’t have the answer, I think for me it means freedom. I find it liberating to share an image without worrying about what it might project, in the very security that confidence provokes.
In any case, absolutely everything Amy says is true and I think we are left with a key contribution to life. This talk is a good influence, to which I would never have arrived without the reference provoked by a great friend of life.
