  1. Transcendental memories.

The Slow Burn

Certain experiences in life leave an indelible mark on us in unexpected ways. Some even expand our understanding of the world and ourselves.

My recent journey to India, from which I have just returned, was one such transformative experience. During the five nights of the Kutastha retreat at Kuchaman Fort, we immersed ourselves in introspection, learning, and connection, surrounded by extraordinary human beings.

My only regret is missing the grand finale—the group’s experience in Vrindavan during the Holi Festival. A flight to London awaited me, where I now write these lines, as I was scheduled to participate as a mentor in my first Unreasonable Group meeting. But more on that later. Let’s return to Rajasthan, India.

This incredible experience would not have been possible without the generosity of Manvendra Singh, who granted us access to Kuchaman Fort—a historical gem his family has meticulously preserved. Manvendra and his team are currently working to restore the fort into a haven of unparalleled hospitality in the legendary Kuchaman City. It was the perfect setting for a profound exploration of self and joy.

I will attempt to share the most significant moments and lessons from my time there, as well as acknowledge those who made this experience unforgettable. Yet, I anticipate that words will struggle to fully capture what I lived.

The Beginning: Crossing the Atlantic with Earth One

The seed of this spiritual journey was planted in another extraordinary setting—the Atlantic Ocean—where I spent 12 days aboard a ship on an Earth One voyage with over 400 people from around the world. I have spoken about this experience in a previous article, but it is worth mentioning briefly, as it was on this journey that I met Månika Dogra, Victorien, and Swami Chidananda—profound, inspiring souls.

Beyond the physical journey, we embarked on a spiritual and philosophical voyage, culminating in a Nakaloka concert night and continuing for five consecutive evenings as we listened to Swami’s storytelling of the Ramayana.

These relationships, built on the purest and most beautiful spirituality, became the foundation for the bridge that led Alexandra and me to the Kutastha retreat, opening us to new dimensions of the spirit.

Kutastha: A Retreat Born from the Ocean

During our long conversations at sea, Victorien and Månika connected with Swami on a deeper level. It was here that the concept of Kutastha took shape—a Sanskrit term that embodies the immutable and eternal consciousness residing within each human being.

Their reflections crystallized into a vision: Kutastha as a unifying principle across spiritual traditions, a call to reconnect with the pure, unchanging essence of being. This vision later materialized as a space for teaching and contemplation in the legendary Kuchaman Fort.

More than just an event, the retreat became the manifestation of an ideal—born from meaningful conversations, honest questioning, and a desire to transcend the barriers imposed by religious and philosophical labels.

Today, the experience remains a priceless jewel in my treasure chest of memories, love and compassion.

Kuchaman Fort: A Place of History and Magic

Nestled in Rajasthan, Kuchaman Fort is an architectural marvel with centuries of history, now reborn as a sanctuary for transformation.

Wandering through its hidden corridors, touching its ancient walls, one could feel the echoes of those who once inhabited and defended it. Every corner, every terrace overlooking the village, exuded history.

I was particularly captivated by its halls—the Hall of Mirrors, the Diwane Khaas, the Krishna Temple, and the Gold Room.

This was the sacred space where the Kutastha retreat unfolded.

Kutastha Retreat: A Transformative Experience

Amid the silent stretches from dawn until long after sunset, and through deep conversations, we immersed ourselves in contemplation, seeking connection with the eternal essence within us.

Meals—exceptional vegan cuisine—were taken in silence, while music became a central thread throughout the five-day retreat.

Månika’s voice, Victorien’s flutes, and Swami’s teachings created unforgettable moments, further enriched by the presence of Shruthi Vishwanath, Kita, and Josh Robertson on the keyboard.

Before sunrise, we sat in silence, beginning our days with Om chanting as the sun ascended. At dusk, we gathered on the Hawa Mahal Terrace for an inspiring ritual, culminating each night with satsangs led by Swami.

We learned a mantra, repeating it 108 times with a japa mala that had been immersed in the sacred waters of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers during the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Other experiences also shaped our retreat. We participated in ecstatic dance, received Native American flutes, and practiced active meditation and the authentic voice method: pranayama, introduced to us by Månika.

The retreat concluded with a Nakaloka concert—an indescribable moment deserving of its own story.

The Participants: Lifelong Connections

The Kutastha retreat brought together individuals from Europe, Oceania, Latin America, the United States, and India. This diversity of cultures, languages, and backgrounds enriched the experience, fostering deep bonds and mutual growth.

From the hushed moments of sunrise contemplation to the uninhibited joy of ecstatic dance, from laughter to tears, from stories to dreams, we created meaningful and loving connections.

One particularly moving moment was the visit of about twenty teenage girls from the village. As part of an initiative to engage with the community, we welcomed them with open hearts. After a concert where we sang and clapped together, we gathered in small groups to share dreams and aspirations. The sincerity with which they expressed their hopes deeply touched me.

This brief yet profound encounter culminated in a communal lunch—a simple yet beautiful act of sharing.

The Dedication of Månika and Victorien

treat. Månika, with her inspiration and sensitivity, infused the experience with meaning. Victorien, with his unwavering dedication, ensured everything ran flawlessly. At times, it felt as if we were in a seven-star sanctuary. His musical talent, especially his flute, added to the magic of the retreat.

Their devotion made each of us feel special and cared for.

The Vedic Tradition: A Journey of Understanding

In a future piece, I will explore the Vedic Tradition more deeply, guided by Swami Chidananda, an exceptional storyteller and scholar of Hindu narratives.

His life as a monk, clad in orange robes, devoted to austerity, spiritual discipline, chastity, and teaching, embodies a single word: detachment.

  1. With profound respect, we discussed the Vedic tradition, juxtaposing its principles with the Abrahamic faiths. This journey of understanding reconciled a long-held question in my soul. For years, as a rebellious follower of Jesus, I rejected rigid doctrines. Now, I embrace a spirituality that is open, inclusive, and boundless love.

Gratitude to Alexandra

To my dear wife, Alex—thank you for walking this path with me, for integrating into this experience, for joining me in our shared search. I know that, at times, this journey has seemed unfamiliar, yet your willingness to open your heart has been a gift beyond measure.

Together, we have marveled at the corridors of the Fort, just as we have walked through the journey of life for decades. The most beautiful testament to our love is our children—Santiago and Adriana—and now our grandchildren, Mauricio, Gastón, and Rafael. Thank you, Stephanie and Ignacio. And thank you to all our ancestors—especially my parents, Mayra and Fernando.

Call to action

This retreat was more than an experience—it was an awakening. I have realized that true growth and fulfillment are found outside our comfort zones.

Discomfort generates. Comfort stagnates.

I invite you to step beyond your limits, to explore the unknown, to embrace new perspectives, to forge deeper connections, and to expand your essence.

May we cultivate generosity, understanding, and compassion.

Do not wait for opportunities. Seek them. Dare to explore. Dare to live.

Peace and light.
