I highly recommend this book published by Lawrence Harrison and Samuel Huntington, as it helps to understand the reasons why there are countries prone to development, while many of us live in others prone to underdevelopment.

Unfortunately for us Latin Americans, we have all the chips to be part of the second group, and our country, Costa Rica, in the very center of Latin America and its culture. In the chapter dedicated to Carlos Alberto Montaner’s lecture, you will find some of the twisted roots of our culture, a term used in one of his most important books, to explain to some extent the origin of our inability to reach higher levels of human and economic development.
